Russia has
expanded the number of troops taking part in military exercises across the
country.
Speaking in
Moscow, General Valeri Gerasimov said a total of 80.000 and 220 warplanes were
being deployed to the Arctic, the southern Caucasus and the contested Sakhalin
islands (in the Pacific Ocean close to Japan), and other regions.
Russia's
show of force is believed to be in response to NATO's build-up of tanks and
military vehicles in the Baltic states.
NATO has
said it will defend member states which potentially may be vulnerable to
Russian military action.
